Stylist Basha Burwell’s Must Haves

Tastemaker and stylist Basha Burwell shares seven of her Maine-inspired decor favorites.

Basha Burwell is an art director, photo stylist, and content creator. She designs and creates gold and silver jewelry and is one of the authors of The Maine House books. As a Mainer, she prides herself on scrappy resourcefulness. She travels for work and has lived in several extraordinary places (New York City, the Netherlands, Los Angeles, and Marfa, Texas). During her travels, she is always keeping an eye out for special things to bring back to her home in Brooklin, Maine. Explore seven of her must-have items right here.

Dream Quilt

Everyone who knows me knows I’m very practical. When it comes to bedding, these cotton quilts are ideal; seasonally versatile and easy to care for. I’ve lost track of how many of these we have. Garnet Hill has been making them for as long as I’ve been freelancing for them (a very long time!)

Hickory Stick Candles

These handmade, beeswax candles are cast from real tree cuttings. I’m partial to objects inspired by nature. These come in fun colors: Watermelon Pink, Sour Apple, Robin Blue, among ten other shades. Mix and match or go monochrome—these bring a dinner table to life. They are also exceptional gifts for a hostess. (hint, hint!)

Shearling Babas

My shearling-lined Babas are always with me. They are as comfy as slippers but add spice to a simple outfit. Wear them to the grocery store. Wear them to your next Haute Maine garden party! I always have extra pairs on hand for houseguests.

Sheepskin

These have been my family’s coziness staple since my son was born; our must-have travel-with-toddler item. Now we have them scattered throughout the house. They warm up an antique bench and make stiff old chairs inviting.

Cocktail Tray in Freer House

I love beautiful handmade things, especially ceramics. These trays, with their gold edges take clay to the next level. I’ve had Jill Rosenwald’s early colorful work in all my living spaces since I met her in Maine in the 1990s.

Olive + Rosa Stripe Cotton Bolster Pillow

Our family’s living spaces are mostly shades of off-white, so we need splashes of color. These pillows are made by my friend Constance in Marfa, Texas. Having them strategically strewn around our house puts a smile on my face and reminds me of the warmth and light of the West Texas desert.

Luxe Capri Hat

Wearing this gorgeous sunhat makes me feel like a contessa. These hats are travel-friendly, fold up like origami, and are made from organic grass fibers. Great sun protection for garden time and for Maine island expeditions.
