Words By Anna Mangum
A Zapapa caftan in silky cotton lawn.

Johanna Thomas’s 30-year career in environmental sustainability inspired the next chapter of her life: handcrafted clothing. Johanna has always loved fabrics and was drawn to the vibrant handmade textiles she saw when traveling in Oaxaca, Mexico. In 2020, Zapapa Handmade was born, her clothing line that started as “pandemic clothing,” pieces that are elegant but versatile, beautiful but comfortable. Using only deadstock fabrics, Johanna designs Zapapa’s unique caftans, pants, dresses, and home goods. You can find Zapapa Handmade online, at pop-ups and HS Mercantile in South Berwick. eo.
