Superlatives lists are a funny thing. Highly subjective and infinitely debatable, they dovetail objective expertise with personal passions. We’re throwing down the gauntlet of this year’s Definitive Maine Guide after dutifully eating, shopping, touring, and designing our way around the state—all with the knowledge that excellence ebbs, flows, and evolves. Thus, this year’s list differs from our last, and will surely differ from next year’s. But right now, these are our picks (you’ll find five in each category, to be exact) for the very best in Maine living.

EAT & DRINK

Special Occasion
When you’re in the market for an extraordinary dining experience that gets it all right—from interior design and service to an exemplary wine list, cocktail program, and outstanding food—point yourself toward Twelve, the minimalist temple boasting meticulously composed spins on vintage New England dishes. At Primo, chef Melissa Kelly continues her winning streak with masterful service and farm-driven plates. For pure romance and celebratory know-how, White Barn Inn’s still the one to beat; while this year, Regards won us over with its creativity (Eel and lamb tartare with seaweed, sunchokes, and ramps? Yes, please.) And even without Sommelier Brad Haskel’s wine list, Salt & Steel had us at truffled cacio e pepe.

Casual
With the state’s deluge of eateries whipping up truly spectacular everyday fixings, this category is stacked with fierce competition. For their refined-but-respectful renditions of classic diner food, The Harbor Café and Palace Diner both deserve props, while the bright-flavored Vietnamese dishes (congee with king oysters, chili oil, and mustard greens) at Công Tú Bôt keep haunting our dreams, as do the nuanced and complex Thai dishes of Long Grain. Meanwhile, the sumptuous green goddess scallops with black rice at Crown Jewel keep us steering the boat toward Great Diamond Island all summer long.

A mosaic of raw salmon, organic seeds, and herbs at Earth at Hidden Pond restaurant.

Date night
Somewhere between fancy-pants dining and come-as-you-are joints, you’ll find the brasserie, the bistro, the gastropub, and the tavern. Places like Kennebunkport’s Chez Rosa and Central Provisions, where relaxed elegance pervades in both food and atmosphere. We put 18 Central Oyster Bar & Grill in the same genre for its pretty yet unpretentious interior and delicate crudos. Wayside Tavern, too, nails that balance between cozy and polished—though we’d also go just for the eggplant terrine alone. And don’t be fooled by the simple-sounding staples at Sammy’s Deluxe; those jalapeño poppers are stuffed with smoked local eel, and the vibe is pure laid-back luxury.

Group Dining
A successful group dining experience relies on a few key things: A staff’s ability to deftly juggle and synchronize lots of requests—as we’ve witnessed repeatedly at Scales and Solo Italiano—and table settings that let guests comfortably eat and talk together. For the latter, we love the extra-long table at Gather. And access to a beautiful private room is always a plus—as at Earth’s enclosed porch and multiple garden cabins that sit up to 12, and at Little Fern, with its stately enclosed private room.

Solo Dining
Certain environments lend themselves more to eating alone than others, and for our money, that means attentive and extra-friendly bar servers, as you’ll find at Broken Arrow and The Garrison—where food isn’t an afterthought simply because it’s at the bar. Then there are places that tend to attract other solo diners, which makes for lively conversation around the bar. For that we love Inkwell at The Press Hotel, The Black Birch, and M.C. Perkins Cove.

Dining With a View
Maine’s abundance of splendid vistas is an embarrassment of riches—one plenty of restaurants take smart advantage of. To wit: Fin & Fern’s stunning position overlooking Stonington Harbor, and nearby Aragosta’s sprawling deck above Goose Cove. At Bagaduce Lunch, the picnic table seating may be humble, but the reversing falls on the river make for a million-dollar experience. It’s also tough to argue with Chebeague Island Inn’s dining room, hovering over sparkling Casco Bay, or with the extraordinary experience of sitting at Ocean while taking in the surging waves of the Atlantic.

As wine shops go, Lorne Wine in Biddeford won our hearts for its personal service, thoughtful selection, and fair pricing.
Flavors like strawberry rhubarb on sugary brioche make Lovebirds Donuts’ vegan treats downright irresistible for vegans and omnivores alike. Photo by Alexis the Greek.

Bar Bites
Done right, bar snacks are small but mighty. Witness the big-flavored green curried shrimp at Hey Sailor! The cicchetti menu at Via Vecchia is home to the infinitely memorable fried cauliflower with eggplant-golden raisin caponata. Izakaya Minato’s broiled Maine oysters with miso custard and ponzu is rivaled only by Pai Men Miyake’s Hamayaki—broiled crab and scallop over sushi rice, kewpie mayo, truffle oil, and eel sauce. And then there’s Papi’s beef empanadas, a flaky, rich ode to the tastes of Old San Juan.

Notable Newcomers
With new entries coming fast and furious over the last year, we’ve made room to recognize 10 (in no particular order) that already have us going back for more:
1. Front & Main
2. 555 North
3. Rosella KPT
4. Merchant & Frye
5. Bread & Friends
6. Thistle & Grouse
7. wolfpeach
8. Trudy Bird’s Ølbar
9. Bar Futo
10. Lenora

Seafood Shack
Everyone has their favorite, and the debate over which is the best will likely never conclude. That said, some do come awfully close to perfection. Dennett’s Wharf, for example, with its super-crunch fish ’n chips consumed blissfully on Castine Harbor. Or the chive mayo-laced lobster nestled in a golden-brown brioche roll at Abel’s Lobster. Is it just us, or does downing lobster at McLoon’s Lobster Shack and Thurston’s taste better, since you’re gazing at the working lobster wharf they came from? Oh, and that fry-o-later at The Lobster Shack at Two Lights? It renders every piece of seafood it touches crispy beyond compare.

Vegan
With its bowls of fragrant coconut soup jacked up with tofu and onions, scallions, and cilantro, Green Elephant has long been a gold standard for Asian-inspired vegan specialties. But now there’s also Vickie’s Veggie Table (don’t miss the “sausage” panini with tofu egg and hot pepper jelly) and food trucks like Totally Awesome Vegan Food Truck and Wild River Kitchen, where all the pizzas can be made vegan. And if brioche twists topped with yuzu-lavender glaze and shortbread crumble means eating vegan at Lovebirds Donuts, then even us omnivores want in.

The White Barn Inn’s spaces fuse classic elements with adventurous touches, inspiring romantic moments and over- the-top experiences.

Ice Cream
We wait all winter for Bresca& The Honeybee and Lulu’s to reopen, so we can dig into creamy scoops of brown butter streusel and ginger cardamom, respectively. Just as delicious and equally packed with local ingredients, find flavors like rose with dark chocolate stracciatella at Sweetcream Dairy. Vegans, meanwhile, swear by Sticky Sweet’s plant-based sea-salted maple. And Gelato Fiasco serves scoops of wild blueberry crisp that simply embody summer in Maine.

Craft Cocktails
Count on these to shake up libations with skill, top-notch ingredients, and innovation. At The Danforth and The Wallingford Dram, the emphasis is on fresh, seasonal flavors. Woodford F&B specializes in newfangled classics (see: the Emergency Margarita’s hit of Aperol, grapefruit, and chipotle salt). Glammed-up maritime themes inspire Blyth & Burrows’ multi-layered concoctions, and wildly creative gusto is the main ingredient in the retro drinks at The Jewel Box.

Brewery
Maine’s dominance as a heavyweight hub of top-notch breweries continues, drawing craft beer lovers from afar to Portland’s all-day hangouts like Bissell Brothers and Oxbow (also with locations in Newcastle and Oxford). It’s the beer, but also the welcoming atmosphere and culture that makes Flight Deck Brewing in Brunswick, as well as Maine Beer Co. and Mast Landing in Freeport, all national destinations.

Wine Shops
When we want a selection that’s thoughtfully curated, priced fairly, and sold with personalized service, we look to Rockport’s RAYR; Portland’s Maine & Loire; and Lorne Wine in Biddeford. The experts at Vessel & Vine in Brunswick always manage to teach us something, and Blue Hill Wine Shop consistently introduces us to unexpected finds that become new favorites.

Farmers’ Market
Of course, every town believes theirs is the best around. And in the true spirit of locavorism, they’re right. But some, like Portland’s, Belfast’s, and Brunswick-Topsham Land Trust Farmers’ Marketat Crystal Spring Farm, are packed cheek-to-jowl with so many quality vendors, they’re worth driving out of your way for. Others, like those in Skowhegan and Rockland, attract makers and growers with products so ingenious, we can’t help but swing by—after visiting our own town’s, that is.

Farm Dining
Does food get any fresher than when it’s eaten right where it’s grown? Ours is a wonderland of farms serving up extraordinary meals, from Flanagan Farm’s winter dinners (complete with a skating rink, twinkling barn, and beloved local guest chefs) to The Well at Jordan’s Farm ambrosial feasts, served in gazebos all summer. Our winters have been much warmer since making Tops’l Farm raclette fêtes a tradition. For its ticketed dinners, Wolfe’s Neck Center puts its sustainably raised meats in the hands of marquee chefs from spots like Leeward and Chaval. Tickets aren’t required to swing by the cafe at Nezinscot Farm for delectable no-frills, no-pretense breakfasts of organic ingredients raised in its fields.

Maine Classics
A handful of treasures have earned an enduring place in the culinary canon—like Fore Street, still arguably the O.G. of exquisite New England cuisine. After a reno to its interior and menu, Miyake’s innovative sushi bar shines as brightly as ever. The lavish dishes and impeccable service at Natalie’s just seem to be getting more and more splendid. Elda’s ever-changing tasting menu continues to be a splurge-worthy adventure, and Havana looms large in our pantheon for its heady swirl of excellent South and Central American fare, high-octane mojitos, and freewheeling energy.

Dessert
A truly great dessert marries invention with the familiar, and Ilma Lopez at Chaval has mastered the art of combining complex European techniques with surprising elements. (Kelp crème anglaise, anyone?) At Arborvinein Blue Hill, the kitchen does great justice to staples like crème caramel, blending in chocolate and coffee to create symphonic results. The intense sweet-tart flavors of E. Wales Hospitality’s cherry panna cotta at The Norumbega Inn dance across plates—and palates. And Terlingua’s ultra creamy chocolate pudding is taken to new and lusty levels with Mexican cinnamon, while pie whisperer Helen’s Restaurant’s wild blueberry pie is so pure and sweetly balanced, it has us swearing off all other versions. Almost.

STAY

Inns
When we want to feel like a guest in a close friend’s beautifully appointed home, we look to The Francis. Likewise, The Blair Hill Inn, which ushers visitors into light-filled rooms with fireplaces and million-dollar views out to Moosehead Lake. Camden Harbour Inn is a singular and luxurious sanctuary filled with extraordinary contemporary art, in-room saunas, and Apple iPads. And if romance is in the cards, the new bungalows at Cape Arundel Inn fit that bill perfectly, with French doors that open to balconies overlooking the surf. Equally so, the cottages at White Barn Inn—an over-the-top experience that arguably has no top.

Resorts
If it’s true that God really is in the details, then these properties are nothing short of heavenly. We adore Hidden Pond for its serene woodland setting, luxury-laden cabins, and magical gardens, but we also can’t stay away from Inn by the Sea’s sprawling beach suites decked out with artful accessories. Cliff House Maine’s gorgeous perch above the crashing waves of the coastline is rivaled only by the sumptuous suites and spectacular sunsets at The Lodge at Moosehead Lake, and the plush rooms and 180-degree views of Somes Sound make The Claremont Hotel a place we return to again and again.

Boutique Hotels
Small in stature but big on creature comforts and hospitality, places such as The Press Hotel woo with spot-on service and rooms cheekily designed like writers’ studies. The Lincoln Hotel won us over with its spectacular lobby and très cool rooftop pool/tiki bar, and Lockwood Hotel brims with fine art and homages to local history. We love the contemporary-meets-historic decor of The Federal; and the Inn at Diamond Cove offers such a slew of activities you may never leave the island.

SHOPPING & SPA

Home & Design
With all due respect to the thicket of fantastic antique and furniture shops now dotting the Pine State, these are the stores that make our hearts beat a little faster whenever we wonder what we’ll discover next. Fresh ideas and expertly mixed pieces abound at Rusticator, whereas traditional New England meets delicate touches of exotic global influence at Anthony Catalfano Home. We turn to both Mae and Home Remedies for artistic textiles in brilliant prints, and to Maine Street Design Co. for a bevy of accessories that merge the joyful with the tasteful.

Women’s Clothing
When the siren call of impeccable designer pieces beckons, it’s Judith that we make our way to. For upscale weekend dressing, there’s the selection of easy dresses by Nili Lotan and funky pants by Hudson at Zane, and the C’est Moi denim jackets and flattering Yara maxi dresses at Fika. More casual but no less elegant: the resplendent and customizable designs lining racks at Jill McGowan and fourTWELVE, created on-site in both cases by (respectively) owners Jill McGowan and Beth Bowley.

Men’s Clothing
Once upon a time, men had pitifully few sartorial options—with only Joseph’s of Portland offering an admirable mix of modern designer duds and custom suiting. These days Joseph’s is still keeping the faith, but has also been joined by fashion-forward places like Portland Dry Goods and Man on Main. Together with relative newcomers such as Dannah For Men and Dapper & Co., they’ve collectively opened up a new dimension of dressing for the lads, with individual service, high-quality grooming products, and smart accessories.

Gifts
Who needs a personal shopper when you have such imaginatively curated shops as Little Maine Mercantile and Blanche + Mimi to make your gift giving look positively inspired? We depend, too, on Brick + Mortar for everything from Japanese cutlery to handmade paper, and on Trove for local ceramics and minimalist mod jewelry. Meanwhile, Folly 101 stocks everything—darling baby sweaters to handmade linen aprons—we need to elicit a smile.

Resort Spa
A sense of place meets peace of mind at otherworldly seaside settings like The Spa at CliffHouse, Blair Hill Inn, Spruce Point Inn, and SPA at Inn by the Sea—all of which bolster their meticulous massages and body scrubs with natural Maine ingredients. And likewise, the tranquil Samoset Resort takes a cue from the ocean it overlooks with offerings like the Marine Anti-aging Facial.

Day Spa
Even a short visit to a spa should feel transportive, which is why we applaud Nine Stones Spa and Lucinda’s Day Spa—they, along with Tree of Life Day Spa and Pura Vida Day Spa, are peaceful sanctuaries that feel a world away. A massage or body exfoliation at any of the above is enough to change our mood entirely. And after a restorative soak at Washington Baths? We may not go back to the office for the rest of the day.

Among our favorite inns, The Francis is one of those that reminded us of a close friend’s beautifully appointed home.
