When called upon to help breathe new life into a young family’s turn-of-the-century home in Portland’s West End, Tina Rodda, founder and principal designer at Eyder Curated Kitchens + Home, saw an opportunity to craft an updated kitchen with all the modern amenities and beautiful details befitting the home’s historic past.
The removal of a window and secondary service staircase dividing the kitchen and dining room allowed for a more open, family-friendly space that now includes a large worktop island. In addition, a reimagined back entry made way for a new pantry and powder room. Tina and her team worked with the homeowners to navigate the Historic Preservation Board building restrictions to ensure the project would uphold the beauty of Portland’s cherished West End.
In keeping with the homeowner’s admiration of English country kitchens, Tina and her team recommended robust, honest materials to create an instant sense of timelessness. Moody black cabinets and warm white walls create a rich backdrop for family heirlooms and functional pieces displayed on an open shelf and antique brass hanging rail. Burnished brass hardware and an unlacquered brass bridge faucet are not just elements of the design; they are essential storytellers. These living finishes were selected to contribute to the room’s evolving story, adding layers to its charm.
At its heart, the expansive island boasts a custom walnut top, seamlessly blending function and style as a family-friendly workspace. With a roomy pantry ensuring everything’s at hand, this space is tailored for the rhythm of family life.
By understanding the homeowners’ aspirations, Tina and her team at Eyder Curated Kitchens + Home have orchestrated a kitchen where past meets present, functionality intertwines with aesthetics, and every detail has a tale to tell.
