Jewelry for Your Walls

All that glitters isn’t (only) gold. In a New Ravenna mosaic, it could just as easily be ruby or rose quartz, chrysocolla or cat’s eye.

When reflecting on applications of color that caught our team’s collective eye in 2023, nothing held hearts quite like the colorful, jeweled mosaics we saw from New Ravenna. Their handmade, intricate designs swirl with semi-precious stones more often found in a jewelry box than on a wall or floor—and had us utterly transfixed.

And since tile is essentially the jewelry of a home, our necks and fingers needn’t have all of the fun. We turned to New Ravenna’s Creative Director, Cean Irminger, for her thoughts on the mosaic-as-home-jewelry theory.

“Bespoke mosaics are very much in the same aesthetic realm as fine jewelry. Both utilize and celebrate precious materials, and the highest degrees of craftsmanship and artistic ingenuity. Both are used to catch the attention and to make a personal statement, and both beautify the canvas they inhabit, be it the body or the home.

Just like jewelry, mosaics can be big, bold, and the main attraction of a space, or they can be lovely and subtle and quietly enhance all of the aspects of an interior. Qualities such as the play of light on a surface; the intricate combinations of a variety of colors, textures, and precious materials; and the scale and cut of the individual elements are design choices both crafts use to create a personal statement piece for the owner, and a delight for the viewer.”
